I set off last night to find something different to eat. The street food down at the various markets is a world apart from the Sea Rover, (http://www.jedburgh-online.org.uk/select.asp?ssb=Food%20and%20Drink&ssc=takeaways), back home. The range of crustaceans, mollusc's, and fish is amazing, most of which is still alive in aerated plastic bins. I had sauteed bamboo clams in black bean sauce followed by fried stomach fish. The second dish I chose because I had absolutely no idea about what the hell it was, either a fish named a Stomach Fish or the stomach of a fish. So far Google has yet to enlighten me. It came in various sized pieces, tasted salty, had very tender yellow flesh and was lightly fried with chili flakes. So far this restaurant (Aberdeen seafood restaurant, Woosung st) has the most comprehensive intestine and feet menu I've seen, boiled, fried or lightly braised.
It seems wine is lagging behind in developing its image and encouraging a new wave of consumers. For example, there are beer adverts on billboards, tables and shops. One way San Miguel, promotes their beer brand is by giving one waitress in every bar/cafe a San Mig uniform, this way the beer brand names are every where! So far the only advertisement for wine I've seen involves two cartoon mice dressed in suits, staggering around a barrel clutching bottles of red wine, how is that meant to encourage people the drink (sensibly)? I'm not advocating a blanket coverage of the major brands but some stimulation in what is an important market would be a start.
What wonderful memories you evoke with your descriptions. Hong Kong (wine or no) will have to go on the holiday list.
